FILED BY: M. McGonagall

REPORT: A mountain troll, transferred into Hogwarts via the lower entrance the previous evening (30 October) for the purposes of security regarding a high-interest research project, broke free of its sleeping enchantment and escaped at approximately 7:15pm during the Hallowe’en Feast. Q. Quirrell, overseeing the troll’s transfer from Dungeon 3 to Dungeon 11, left the Dungeon floor to alert Hogwarts staff, at the time stationed in the Hall. On A. Dumbledore’s orders, Heads of Houses directed Prefects to lead students to their respective Common Rooms. Hogwarts staff were sent to the Dungeons to subdue the troll. At some point in the proceedings, Quirrell temporarily lost consciousness but was quickly revived by M. McGonagall. A small team formed to secure the Main floor and to prevent the troll from moving upward. S. Snape, as ordered by the Headmaster, secured the Third Floor Corridor regarding a high-security matter. In the time between Quirrell’s leaving the troll and reporting the escape, the troll progressed through the Dungeon hallway and up the stairs to the Main floor. The troll proceeded to a girl’s toilet, where it encountered three first-year students who had become separated from their Houses: Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ronald Weasley. A small team of staff (McGonagall, Quirrell, and Snape, having secured the Third Floor Corridor), found the troll and subdued it via stunning spell before the it did serious harm to the students. Reporting no serious injuries beyond general shock and confusion, the students were sent to Gryffindor Common Room. The troll was returned to the Dungeon floor and transferred to Dungeon 11.

FOLLOW-UP: Quirrell will receive disciplinary warning from the Headmaster’s Office for poor judgement and insufficient adherence to school safety protocol. Staff will review emergency protocol and communication standards at the coming staff meeting (3 November).
