Location: Hogwarts Headmaster’s Office. Present: B. Bode, A. Dumbledore, phoenix (‘Fawkes’).
BODE: Greengrass knows. He knows – everything.
DUMBLEDORE: Everything? Broderick, this is no time for dramatics.
BODE: I intercepted his report. He’s been in Gage’s library. He’s seen Gage’s cellars.
[A long pause. Dumbledore stares into the fire.]
BODE: He is – Gage invited him to stay. In his – villa. Gage seems to have found Greengrass’s lodgings in the village inhumane. They’ve grown close. It was not Greengrass’s mission, but it’s become – I do not know if Greengrass found them, or if Gage revealed them himself –
DUMBLEDORE: [Gently shaking his head] Alexis . . . Alexis . . .
BODE: We’ve always known he had a tendency to boast.
[Dumbledore stands, crosses the room, and opens a bottle of Chartreuse.]
DUMBLEDORE: [Pouring himself a glass] Has he put two and two together? Does he understand?
BODE: He has requested a meeting with Crane.
DUMBLEDORE: [Sighs audibly] It is no matter. What has begun has already begun. By this time tomorrow, a series of event will be set in motion from which there can be no reverse. Do not fear, Broderick. We will have their trust.
[Another pause.]
BODE: [Staring into the fire] I – I did not realize –
[Dumbledore turns to Bode with piercing eyes, but does not speak.]
BODE: [Turning to Dumbledore] I – I have put two and two together as well.
DUMBLEDORE: Ah.
BODE: Albus – unicorn blood – basilisk venom – I – I hadn’t –
DUMBLEDORE: It is time, Broderick. God has made his move, and now man makes his. The die, I suppose, is cast. We act now by the fate of its landing. [He takes a sip of Chartreuse, gazing at Bode inscrutably.] Tomorrow will be a long day. Get some rest.
